Choosing a Venue that Fits Your Budget

Planning a wedding in the Okanagan is an exciting experience, but it can also be an expensive one—especially when it comes to booking the perfect venue. With its stunning landscapes and popular wedding locations, the Okanagan offers plenty of options that can fit any couple’s dream day. However, saving money while booking a wedding venue here is possible with a little bit of strategy and flexibility. From considering off-season dates to exploring less traditional venues, there are several ways to reduce costs without compromising on the beauty and experience of your big day. In this section, I’ll share some tips and tricks for navigating the wedding venue search while keeping your budget in check.

  • Book your wedding for a weekday. Most wedding venues in Kelowna and throughout the Okanagan will give you a pretty tasty discount for booking your wedding Monday-Friday, and even sometimes on Sundays. This can help free up some funds to put toward other parts of your wedding.
  • Book your wedding in the off-season. If you book your wedding any time from November to March, venues generally offer a discount. It’s a win-win – you get to save a bit of money on your venue and they get a booking in the off-season.
  • Book your wedding at a new venue who is looking for clientele. There are gorgeous new venues popping up in Kelowna and in the smaller surrounding towns who will likely give you a great deal. They need the clientele and are looking to build a portfolio of their own for their marketing.
  • Have your wedding in a smaller town instead of a touristy city. Kelowna is expensive! There are SO many absolutely stunning wedding venues in the Okanagan – check out venues in towns like Peachland, Summerland, Oliver, OK Falls, or Vernon.
  • Have a backyard wedding! Save the venue cost completely by hosting your wedding in your backyard. Even just having a backyard ceremony and then moving to a community hall for your reception can save you thousands in rental fees, and it’s really intimate and personalized.
  • Explore non-traditional locations for your wedding. The Okanagan is filled to the brim with stunning parks, rocky beaches, and secluded forests. Bertram Creek Park for example has a beautiful pavilion that you can rent for an hour. You can pay for a license to host your wedding in a park without having to pay venue rental fees as well.
  • Look for all-inclusive packages. An all-inclusive venue package is the best bang for your buck. You get the venue all day, catering, decor, rentals, and set-up and take-down. This can help you save money by reducing the amount of vendors you need to hire.
  • Ask your venue if they’ll give you a discount for paying in full up-front. This may not be an option for every couple, but some wedding venues will offer a discount for up-front full payment as opposed to going with a payment plan.
  • Negotiate and shop around. Compare packages of different venues – some include chairs, tables, and decor, while others may charge extra. Some venues may even give you a discount if you are flexible with your wedding date.

Wedding Dress Shopping for the Frugal Bride

Finding the perfect wedding dress can feel like a dream come true, but it can also come with a hefty price tag—especially in a picturesque region like the Okanagan. The good news? You don’t have to break the bank to look stunning on your big day. With a bit of creativity and some insider tips, you can discover beautiful, affordable options that fit your style and budget. From local bridal boutiques to online shopping and even pre-loved treasures, there are plenty of ways to score a gorgeous gown without sacrificing quality or elegance. Let’s dive into how you can find your dream wedding dress in the Okanagan, all while staying within your budget.

  • Rent your wedding dress. If you don’t think you’ll ever wear your wedding dress again, rent one for your big day! This little tip could save you a couple grand that you could put toward another part of your wedding.
  • Check out consignment shops in your area. Many consignment shops carry stunning wedding gowns from last season that are half the price of buying one brand new. Shops like Frock & Fellow in Kelowna may have exactly what you’re looking for.
  • Buy a second-hand dress online. There are lots of reputable second-hand wedding dress websites where you can find the dress of your dreams for a fraction of the cost. Check out Still White, Nearly Newlywed, or Poshmark.
  • Explore Facebook Marketplace or local wedding Facebook wedding groups. There are dozens of brides trying to sell their wedding dress from last season on Marketplace! You’ll get an incredible deal on gorgeous gowns that are within your wedding budget.
  • Borrow a dress from a friend or relative. Did your grandmother wear a timeless, beautiful gown on her wedding day? Borrowing a dress like that could save you thousands, while also carrying deep sentimental value. Imagine the connection and memories it brings, wearing a dress that has already been cherished by family members or close friends. Plus, it could be your “something borrowed”!
  • Don’t wear an actual wedding dress. You don’t need to invest in an extravagant, costly wedding gown to look absolutely stunning on your big day. Instead, stand out by wearing whatever makes you feel amazing. Embrace the non-traditional look—it’s not only on-trend but will also make your wedding photos truly one-of-a-kind.
  • Shop for sample dresses. Buying a sample dress for your wedding can save you money by offering a high-quality gown at a fraction of the original price, without sacrificing style or elegance.
  • Shop for your dress at a chain retailer instead of a boutique. Sure, boutiques are quaint, trendy, and can feel a bit more personalized. They are also way more expensive than shopping at a chain such as David’s Bridal. These chains still have absolutely stunning and unique wedding dresses, but with a smaller price tag.

Saving Money on Food, Beverages, and Desserts

Receptions can be expensive, and catering, drinks, and dessert often make up a large portion of the budget. But there are plenty of creative ways to save without sacrificing flavour or style. Whether you’re looking to trim costs or find budget-friendly alternatives, there are simple yet effective strategies to help you serve your guests delicious food and drinks while staying within your budget. In this section, we’ll explore tips and tricks to help you save money on your wedding catering, drinks, and desserts—without compromising on the celebration!

  • Don’t serve wedding cake. I know, a travesty. But let me tell you – wedding cakes are expensive, with the average price coming out to $500-$700. That money could be put toward your wedding dress, or even toward your honeymoon. Consider another more trendy option like a donut wall, cupcakes, build-your-own-sundae station or cookies! Trust me when I say that half of your guests won’t even eat the cake.
  • Limit your menu. Instead of offering a wide array of choices, stick to two or three main meal options. You can even create a theme around it (like Italian, BBQ, or Mediterranean) to keep it cohesive and simple. Fewer choices reduce both food waste and the cost of variety.
  • Opt for a buffet or family-style meal. Instead of a plated meal, which requires more staff and attention, consider a buffet or family-style service. These options can be more affordable because they often reduce labor costs and allow for bulk ordering of food.
  • Consider a food truck or casual catering. A food truck might be a quirky and affordable alternative to a sit-down meal. Many trucks offer gourmet options for lower prices than traditional catering services. Plus, it adds a fun element to the event!
  • Two words: Toonie Bar. Ignore people who say that a cash or toonie bar is cheap. It is not, and I know for a fact that more and more couples are choosing to go with a toonie bar instead of an open bar. Open bars add literally thousands of dollars to your wedding budget. To offset those costs, have people pay just $2 for a drink.
  • Limit the choices of alcohol for your guests. Instead of an open bar, which can get expensive, consider serving only beer, wine, and a signature cocktail. You can also limit the alcohol to just a few hours of the event to save money on the amount needed. Alternatively, you could ask guests to bring their own alcohol, especially if it’s a smaller or more casual wedding.
  • Consider a brunch or lunch wedding. Breakfast and lunch weddings are typically less expensive than dinner receptions. Serve lighter fare such as salads, sandwiches, pastries, or a build-your-own omelet bar. You can also get creative with breakfast-inspired dessert options like waffles or pancakes!

How to Save Money on Your Decor, Florals and Stationary

One thing wedding couples often find themselves overspending is on decor. While creating a beautiful atmosphere is a priority for many, there are plenty of creative ways to cut costs without sacrificing style. In this section, we’ll explore budget-friendly tips and ideas to help you save money on your wedding decor, from DIY projects to smart shopping choices, ensuring your big day is both memorable and cost-effective.

  • Join local wedding Facebook groups and check Marketplace. Previous wedding couples are on there every single day selling their used arches, silk flowers, vases and votives, battery-powered candles, and all sorts of other wedding decor items. Stay frugal and buy used!
  • Rent your decor instead of buying new. Instead of buying expensive decor, rent it from a wedding rental company. Things like chairs, tablecloths, archways, and even chandeliers can be rented for a fraction of the cost.
  • Use nature as your decor. If you’re having an outdoor wedding, take advantage of the natural beauty around you—trees, flowers, or the beach can add incredible charm without much added cost.
  • Get creative with where you shop. You don’t have to buy everything from specialty wedding stores. Look at home decor stores, craft shops, and online retailers like Amazon or Etsy for unique finds. Vintage shops can have beautiful, one-of-a-kind decor items that give your wedding a charming, personalized look.
  • Repurpose decor and florals between events. If you’re having a ceremony and reception in different locations, you can reuse flowers and decor by moving them between the two events. For example, ceremony flowers can be transferred to the reception for centrepieces.
  • Use silk and/or dried flowers instead of going through a florist. Florists are dang expensive. The average cost of a fresh bridal bouquet alone is $350. You can get real-looking silk flowers at Michael’s or even the dollar store to save hundreds. Another option is Etsy – you can find fully made dried flower bouquets and arrangements for a very reasonable price. Not to mention, then you can keep your bouquet forever as a memento.
  • Simplify your floral arrangements. Instead of extravagant flower arrangements, use smaller amounts of high-impact flowers, or incorporate more greenery to fill in. Bridesmaids’ bouquets and your own can be a great place to allocate your floral budget—just keep them simple and fresh.
  • Use electronic save the dates and invites instead of paper stationary. This tip can save you up to $1000, and it is far more environmentally friendly. If your family and friends want to print their invite to have a memento, they can absolutely do so.
  • Design your own stationary on Canva and print them yourself. Canva has hundreds of gorgeous templates for wedding stationary including menus, invites, save the dates, and thank you cards. Design them yourself easily and print them through a service such as Vistaprint to stay in your budget!
