BEHIND THE PHOTOS

IDEAS FOR DOWNTOWN PHOTOSHOOTS

01.
Urban Street Art

Find a mural or colourful graffiti wall and pose against it for a vibrant, playful vibe. The urban art will add an edgy and modern feel to the photos and will feel completely unique to you.

02.
Café Date

Snap some cozy shots at a café or coffee shop. Capture moments like sharing a drink, laughing over coffee, or people-watching while sitting together at a table. It’s the perfect setting to capture those detail shots like an engagement ring or even just some hand-holding.

03.
Reflections and Windows

Use reflections in downtown glass buildings or storefront windows to capture unique, mirror-like images of you both. One of my favourite ways to capture images, especially candid shots, is to have the couple stand inside while I take the photo through a window from the outside.

04.
Staircase Shots

Look for a cool staircase, whether inside a historic building or a modern urban structure. You can get creative with posing on the steps, from sitting together to walking hand-in-hand. You can use those leading lines to capture some incredibly dynamic snapshots of your subject.

05.
Crosswalk Love

Shoot in the middle of a crosswalk or at a busy intersection with cars and people around. This gives a dynamic, fast-paced feel, highlighting how you two are the focus in a bustling city. This is the one time I’m totally ok with having random strangers or cars in the background of photos!

06.
Walking Through Alleyways

Take advantage of downtown alleyways, with their unique textures and gritty charm. Alleyways can create a cool, cinematic backdrop for romantic or candid moments, and certainly lean toward that urban vibe you’re going for.

07.
At a Fountain or a Park

If your downtown has any public parks or fountains, use those as a backdrop for some serene, romantic shots. You can sit by the fountain, stroll through the park, or even splash each other playfully.

08.
On a Rooftop

Capture the city skyline as a backdrop from a rooftop or high-rise building. Sunset or twilight shots are perfect here, giving a magical vibe to your photos. Some of my absolute favourite sessions I’ve shot are on the Library Parkade rooftop in Downtown Kelowna!

09.
Biking Around

Okay, this one is adorable and something that’s on my bucket list for couples sessions. Rent bikes or ride together on a tandem bike around the city. Capture moments of joy, like laughter or a peaceful ride through the streets.

10.
Vintage Car or Motorcycle

If you can find a cool vintage car or bike, pose next to it for a retro-inspired shot. Downtown areas often have cool spots for finding this kind of gear. These kinds of additions to your shoot make for super unique and fun images!

11.
Window Seat or Bus Stop

Take a shot from inside a cool public space like a vintage train station, bus stop, or public transit. You could also take shots while sitting in a cozy window nook or booth. These images feel super intimate, and with some fun cropping and angles you can achieve some really artistic and dynamic photos.

12.
Neon Signs

Look for neon signs or cool lighting in bars or stores, which can give a moody and vibrant glow to your photos. These can create interesting contrasts, especially at night.

13.
Umbrella or Rainy Day Shots

If it’s raining, grab an umbrella and embrace the moodiness of a rainy day. Downtown streets glisten with reflections, creating a dreamy atmosphere. I have a couple of clear, rounded umbrellas that add a touch of nostalgia and creativity to my rainy day shoots. Clear umbrellas are great because you can shoot right through them to get some arty snapshots!

14.
Beneath City Lights

Take advantage of night-time shots under city lights, streetlamps, or light posts. The city’s glow will add a romantic, intimate feel to your downtown photoshoot. Add some flash and you can get some really cool images with extra dynamic lighting!

15.
Picnic in the Park

If there’s a park nearby, bring a blanket, some food, and a picnic basket. Candid shots of sharing a snack or just lounging on the blanket during your downtown photoshoot add a cute, relaxed vibe. Make it extra cute by bringing other props like a book, acoustic guitar, or some other hobby item.

16.
Get Playful Near Landmarks

Have fun near iconic downtown landmarks (fountains, statues, old architecture). Playfully interact with these spots by jumping, twirling, or just goofing off. You can see the iconic Dolphins statue located in Kelowna for this downtown photoshoot!

17.
Walking Hand-in-Hand

Simply walk hand-in-hand down a beautiful street or sidewalk, capturing natural, candid moments of connection as you stroll. One of my favourite prompts is to have the couple gently nudge each other with their hips to get the giggles going and add some nice motion to the photos.

18.
Skyscraper Shadows

Use the shadows and lights from skyscrapers to create dramatic contrasts and silhouettes during golden hour or at night. Unfortunately in Kelowna we don’t really have skyscrapers to work with so I have to improvise. One day I’ll get photos like this in a bigger city!

19.
Lounge at a Rooftop Bar

If there’s a rooftop bar in the area, use that setting for a chic, relaxed vibe. Shots of you two having drinks or just enjoying the view can be stunning. And again, work in shooting through windows and doorways!

20.
In Front of a Vintage Store

Downtown areas often have unique vintage stores with old signage. Use this as a backdrop for fun, retro-style photos for your downtown photoshoot.

21.
Inside a Library or Bookshop

Are you working with a couple of bookworms? Ask permission from a library or bookshop to shoot a session in there and I guarantee your photos will be unique, fun, and adorable!
